Borrowed, Learned, & Thought

It’s been an action-packed holiday break—though “break” doesn’t quite feel like the right word. Dana and I have been joking that we could use a break from the break, but I wouldn’t change a thing. From hosting Christmas Eve with family and my annual friends get-together to revisiting a childhood favorite restaurant with Mylo and family, it’s been full of good times.

Today, we took Mylo back to the aquarium—his second visit since June. At 16 months, he’s so much more aware now. He loved waving at the turtles and sharks as they swam past the tank and giggling at the penguins during feeding time. The highlight, though, was the 2,000+ pound hippos coming right up to the glass to say hello.

All that to say, I finally sat down yesterday to start writing my 2024 In Review. I’m making good progress, but I don’t want to rush it. I’d rather enjoy the process and feel satisfied when I hit publish. Writing it feels a bit like pushing through a tough workout—challenging but rewarding. It’s already been a lot of fun reflecting on another wild year and looking back at last year’s reflections.

In a recent podcast, athlete and entrepreneur Nick Bare shared how getting hit by a car while running made him rethink his mindset. He posed a question that’s stuck with me: Will you be proud of the life you built or the way you built your life?

That question hit home—in life and work. I have ambitions and goals, and while achieving them is meaningful, those moments are fleeting. Whether it’s getting married, buying a home, signing a big client, starting a family, taking on the CEO role, or running my first marathon, these milestones are just chapters in a much longer story. Each comes with its own highs and lows, challenges and triumphs. The real work—and joy—is in the journey itself: finding meaning in the moments, learning from setbacks, and appreciating the growth along the way.

I’m realizing that writing my annual review is my way of reflecting on how I’m building. It forces me to pause, take stock, and think about where I can make changes to better align with what’s important. It’s not about perfection, but progress.

I’m excited to finalize my 2024 In Review and share it with you soon. Keep an eye out for the email.
